There is fallacy and even falsehood in this article. Jews in Europe didn't anticipate the Holocaust, no more than did Gypsies, Poles, etc. European govts., especially in Eastern Europe, were hostile to Jews.
In the area loosely referred to as "Palestine", Jews were a sizable minority. They were overtaxed and otherwise oppressed. Jews who had been immigrating bought land from Arab owners, mostly at exorbitant prices. When Israel began, Arabs were offered citizenship. Arab leaders rejected the idea and, as is well known, invaded Israel. In war, people become displaced.
Now, Israel is the only country in the region providing all of its people not only equality but a standard of living lacking in it's neighboring states.
You guys are all nuts. Israel was established because trying to assimilate into cultures really didn't work our so well, did it? And is it going super well today? Let's revisit the chants and how businesses in New York City won't serve Jews. Not in the 40's but today. Yes, arguments can be made that "zionism" in the form of Jews wanting their own state, existed before that time but so what? The Jews have existed as a people for thousands of years which directly sets them apart from the Palestinians and why wouldn't they want their own nation? Does that mean that everything they do is right? Not by a long shot. But what's your solution? You take away the nation state of Israel and then what? Give it to whom? Palestinians? The discussion is yelling at the wind. It's a waste of effort, time, and energy. How about figuring out how to make the most of it? How about course corrections to improve the future? That would be time much better spent.
